How to Refresh and Renew Your HAZWOPER Training
A HAZWOPER certification is not a one-and-done deal. Those who earn an initial HAZWOPER 40 or HAZWOPER 24 certification are then required to complete a refresher course every year in order to remain in compliance.
Below is a look at what’s needed to refresh and renew your HAZWOPER certification and keep you in good standing.
What are the HAZWOPER Refresher Requirements?
After completing 24 or 40 hours of HAZWOPER training for initial certification, an additional eight hours of refresher training are required each year thereafter.
The 8-hour HAZWOPER refresher course must be completed prior to the anniversary date of your initial 24- or 40-hour training each year. If a substantial amount of time passes before the refresher course is completed, you may be required to repeat your initial training. The grace period for missing your refresher deadline will be determined by your employer.
The 8-hour HAZWOPER continuing education training is in compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 and is accepted for 1.34 Industrial Hygiene CM Points by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) and .8 Continuance of Certification (COC) points from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP).
What Does HAZWOPER Refresher Training Consist Of?
The HAZWOPER 8-hour refresher course is identical to the HAZWOPER 40 and HAZWOPER 24 training which you are already familiar with.
Just like your initial training, the annual refresher course is self-paced so you may log in and out as needed to complete your refresher requirements according to your own busy schedule. Access the course from any internet-capable device to work when and where you want.
The course features a mix of written content, videos and interactive animations covering the following topics:
- Regulatory requirements for HAZWOPER workers
- Types of hazardous substances
- Toxicology
- Hazardous substance labeling requirements and standards
- Respiratory protection
- PPE types and selection
- Decontamination guidelines and methods
- Drums and other hazardous waste containers
- Incompatible chemicals
- Proper donning, doffing and decontamination
You will train again on NET’s exclusive HAZWOPER Hands-on Simulator® and self-grading quizzes will help prepare you for the final exam. As with 24- and 40-hour training, instructor support will be available to you along the way and a study timer will keep track of the eight hours needed to complete the course.
You may view a free demonstration of the 8-hour HAZWOPER refresher course here.
Once you’ve completed your eight hour of training and passed the final exam, you will be able to download an e-certificate while a hard copy wallet card is sent by mail.
