Do You Need to Take the 24-Hour HAZWOPER Course?



If your workplace is a designated HAZWOPER site under OSHA regulation 29 CFR 1910.120, you will need to take the 24-hour HAZWOPER course. OSHA-approved HAZWOPER training is required for everyone who works at contaminated sites.



This HAZWOPER 24-hour online training course provides basic training for people who may be exposed to hazardous chemicals or doing clean-up of hazardous substances, but will not face daily hazards. It is required if you or your employees’ exposure will meet or exceed OSHA Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs).



In addition to the 24 hours of HAZWOPER training online, you will need a minimum of 1 day of field experience with a trained, experienced supervisor.

  • Log in and out of the course and train on your own schedule. Our system tracks your sessions, content, and study time, allowing you to see how much time has accrued as you study. You will have to accumulate a minimum of 24 hours within the course. Quizzes and the final exam are self-grading.
  • This course offers customer and instructor support throughout your training. Once you pass the course, you can immediately download your e-certificate. Hard copy wallet cards will be mailed to you.
  • The 24-Hour HAZWOPER course provides continuing education units (CEUs). This course is accepted for 4.01 Industrial Hygiene CM Points by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) and 2.4 Continuance of Certification (COC) points from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP).

Course Features

NET’s 24-hour HAZWOPER course features the OSHA-approved HAZWOPER Hands-on Simulator®, 14 full-length videos, and over 50 interactive animations. You can take it for certification or continuing education units (CEUs) on any computer or mobile device.

This course is divided into a series of 77 modules, with self-grading quizzes throughout to assure you are retaining the knowledge. You or your employees will learn why protective equipment is needed, how to wear and remove it, how to observe safety regulations and examination of site control.

You’ll take a final exam at the end of the course and receive a valid certificate for passing. You’ll also have a year from the time of registration to access the course.

After taking the 24-hour NET HAZWOPER course, you or your employees will be able to:

  • Describe training and other requirements for HAZWOPER workers.
  • Describe various types of hazardous substances.
  • Define toxicity and describe factors that affect it.
  • Describe hazardous substance labeling requirements and standards.
  • Describe factors associated with respiratory protection.
  • Describe various types of and selection criteria for personnel protective equipment.
  • Describe decontamination guidelines and methods.
  • Describe proper handling of drums and other hazardous waste containers.
  • Recognize the results of mixing incompatible chemicals and list examples of various incompatible chemicals.

Physical and On Site Requirements

The 24 Hour HAZWOPER Course is taken online. As with any training, classroom or online, the employer is required by regulations to train the employee(s) on performance based standards for any applicable equipment.

Plan States (approved by U.S. OSHA) must have standards at least as stringent as the Federal HAZWOPER training requirements. They may have additional training requirements, however.

What is the difference between 40-hour and 24-hour HAZWOPER training?

Besides the training time difference, the 24-hour training is aimed primarily at individuals who will work at contaminated sites and conduct work tasks that do not expose them to hazardous substances at or above the Permissible Exposure Limits (PEL's). 40-hour HAZWOPER certified individuals can be exposed to hazardous substances that exceed these limits but they must wear the appropriate PPE.

Does HAZWOPER certification expire?

Yes, HAZWOPER certifications need to be renewed annually by completing HAZWOPER refresher training.
